year of the Rat

This is the year of the Rat. I'm wondering if the rats in New York City are going to bring us luck or if it will be a good year for rat breeding. After I read my Chinese horoscope I learned that it will be an awful year for those of us born in the year of the horse - in every aspect.

And what a way to start the new year being reminded of that. You see these inflatable rats around the city the union workers display outside construction projects to protest non-union contracts. This one is near Union Square. I've seen them in two sizes, this is the smaller one.

Following the debackle at the Building Department whereby a crane inspector was reprimanded for a supposedly false inspection of a crane that later fell and killed seven people, the neighbor who ratted him out should be thanked for bringing the issue to light. These rats are a testimony to the incompetence we are coming to see more often amid the NYC building boom. three fallen cranes, more than half a dozen dead as a result, and today, three more cranes are suspended from use...I don't mind seeing some more of these non-furry creatures around. They sure help to draw attention to a potential problem before others get hurt. As for me, I'm a sheep myself: I follow the crowd to safer sidewalks...and I always look up!
